Members of the Kayapo tribe in Brazil blocked a main highway through the Amazon - bow and arrow in hand - to demand help against coronavirus and an end to the deforestation of the rainforest.


Wearing traditional feather headdresses and body paint, they used tires to halt traffic.


Brazil's indigenous population has been hit particularly hard by the Covid-19 pandemic, with 21,000 infections and 618 deaths in the community, according to the Brazilian Indigenous Peoples’ Association.


“This sickness is getting worse by the day,” chief Beppronti Mekragnotire said at the roadblock through an interpreter, local news reports.


The country has struggled to contain the virus. Often dismissed by President Jair Bolsonaro, it is now one of the worst-hit countries in the world – with nearly 3.5m cases and 100,000 deaths.
